29-Aug-2007 NSK's Silver-Lube

Many industries, from bottling operations to bakeries and food processing to pharmaceuticals, must adhere to rigorously maintained standards for hygiene and workplace cleanliness. That translates into frequent and thorough washdowns characterised by high pressure, high temperatures, lots of water, harsh detergents and corrosive chemicals.

Obviously then, it is critical that the equipment used in these hostile environments be able to withstand the demanding conditions, and bearing assemblies are no exception. The Silver-Lube® series of bearing assemblies from NSK is designed and made specifically for these types of applications.

Often a bearing assembly is only as durable as its housing. The Silver-Lube® housing is manufactured from Valox® 420, a high quality, 30% glass-filled thermoplastic polymer resin which offers exceptional strength, rigidity and dimensional stability. It is non-corrodible and can withstand repeated exposure to heat, ultraviolet light, pressure, water, detergents and a variety of chemicals without breaking down. As a naturally-coloured resin, there is no paint or coating to flake, chip or peel, and either contaminate the process, or result in premature housing failure. Its solid base also prevents the ingress of organic contaminants.

Not only is the dense, smooth surface resistant to dirt, bacteria, and mould, ASTM G21-70 testing confirms that Valox® resins demonstrate significant fungicidal resistance as well.
As durable and resistant as the housing is, the only thing that might outlast it is the Silver-Lube® bearing insert itself. Manufactured completely from QD51, a modified 440C type stainless steel, the bearing insert operating temperature range is -20°C to +90°C making it well suited to a host of applications.

While permissible bearing speed is ultimately dependent upon shaft tolerances, Silver-Lube® bearings can operate up to 2900 rpm. To enable the bearing to slip easily over standard shafting, the inner ring bore tolerances are on the plus side of the nominal bore. The assembly is effectively sealed and charged with USDA H1 approved food grade grease. The stainless steel grease nipple allows periodic relubrication for an even longer trouble-free operating life cycle.

The Silver-Lube® series of bearing inserts come in pillow block, take-up units, two bolt and four bolt configurations and are designed to accommodate initial misalignment due to mounting errors. Polypropylene end covers are available to fit all housings to either provide additional protection for the bearing in particularly harsh conditions or to meet safety requirements.

Ultimately, the bottom line is performance over the long term. In countless operations where cleanliness is paramount, Silver-Lube® bearings have proven their worth by minimizing maintenance, reducing costly down time and maximizing productivity.

15-Dec-2006 New Linear Guides for Smoother Performance

NSK is pleased to announce the introduction of their new PU/PE Miniature Linear Guides. With this new generation of linear guides, NSK delivers what customers want most of all -- smoother, more efficient performance combined with cost effective design.

Smoother operation is the result of the new ball recirculation design, which incorporates molded resin for the ball recirculation circuit, to stabilize the friction force. The redesign also resulted in the new PU/PE linear guides being 20% lighter than conventional guides which also contributes to the smoother operation. The key to achieving cost effective design was to integrate the ball recirculation mechanism into one unit which decreases the number of parts and simplifies assembly.

The unique labyrinth structures improve slider performance and provides an excellent seal to significantly reduce the generation of dust, making the PU/PE guides well suited to clean room
applications. The elimination of metal-to-metal contact and the improved recirculation and ball groove profile translates into less noise and the use of stainless steel makes the units corrosion
resistant. Optional NSK Patented K1TM lubrication units provide long-term maintenance-free operation up to 50,000KM of travel.

11-Dec-2006 Faster BSS Series

NSK, a leading manufacturer of precision motion control solutions in Japan, is pleased to announce the introduction of the new BSS Series ball screws. This new series has been designed to operate at higher speeds than conventional ball screws to meet the needs of clients looking for ways to improve their productivity and efficiency.

The new BSS Series ball screws is undeniably the fastest ball screw on the market with linear speeds up to 240 meters per minute. The innovative new nut design reduces the maximum nut diameter by 30% compared to conventional tube-type designs making the BSS Series ball screws extremely compact and significantly lighter in weight.

Not only have NSK enginers achieved higher operational speeds, they have also been able to improve performance in ways that help enhance the workplace environment, as well as overall accuracy and lifespan.

The BSS Series ball screws dramatically reduce noise levels, more than 6dB over conventional ball screws, in fact so they are much quieter. As well, vibration levles have also been reduced resulting in smoother movement and less wear and tear.

With speeds approaching that of a linear motor, the new BSS Series ball screws are a high-speed mechanical solution for any market.

20-Oct-2005 NSK HPS Spherical Roller Bearings

NSK has developed the HPS series of spherical roller bearings for various industrial needs. They are claimed to have twice the running life of conventional bearings of the same size, and a maximum limiting running speed that has been improved by up to 20%. The bearings have a high load capacity and self-aligning feature that allows for some misalignment of the axis of rotation.

The unitised design of the bearings enables easy handling and installation, making them popular across industries such as steel, pulp and paper, transportation, extraction and construction, which require durability and smooth running.

Key to the self-aligning performance is the spherical profile of the bearing rollers acting in the bearing inner and outer ring raceways.

Under rotation these geometrical forms interact to produce slippage at the contact surface points between the raceways and rollers.

With this design, NSK has identified the mechanism that causes slippage and creates high friction on the surface, leading eventually to damage due to surface fatigue.

Verified by theoretical analysis and bench testing that the friction can be reduced by controlling the motion of rotating rollers; and that a special surface treatment of the outer ring is effective in achieving this.

Based on these findings, NSK developed mass-production technology and bearings, which can reduce slippage to prolong running life by more than twice that of conventional products.

The cage of a spherical roller bearing is also important as it must have high dimensional accuracy and functionality.

NSK applied a nitriding surface treatment to the high-precision pressed steel cage. This can significantly reduce wear in harsh operating environments. Compared with usual nitriding, this treatment forms a finer and harder surface with more uniform hardness. Since the treatment is conducted at high temperatures, the dimensional accuracy of the cage is affected. The firm solved this problem with a way to ensure high accuracy of the cage after treatment. As a result, the problem of cage wear under conditions of continuous running at high speeds, which restricted any increase of the limiting speed of the bearing, has been solved. This is evidenced by the 20% increase in limiting speed achieved by the design.

Initially, 42 sizes with outside diameters from 80 to 260mm will be marketed to the New Zealand industry.
